Berghia Nudibranch - Aiptasia Eating Sea Slug
The Natural Solution to Aiptasia
Berghia nudibranchs are small, reef-safe sea slugs that feed exclusively on Aiptasia anemones, making them one of the most effective and natural ways to eliminate this common reef pest. If Aiptasia has taken over your tank and chemical treatments or fish haven’t worked, Berghia are often the best long-term solution.
Once introduced, Berghia will hunt down Aiptasia in rockwork, overflows, and tight crevices that are hard to reach by hand.
Why Choose Berghia?
- 100% reef safe
- Eats only Aiptasia (won’t harm corals or other livestock)
- Reaches hidden areas where fish and chemicals can’t
- No chemicals added to your aquarium
- Can reproduce in the aquarium when food is available
Important Care & Compatibility Notes
-
Avoid predators: Do not keep with wrasses, peppermint shrimp, filefish, or some crabs as these can eat Berghia.
-
Food requirement: Berghia require Aiptasia to survive. Once Aiptasia is eliminated, Berghia will eventually starve unless moved to another system with Aiptasia.
-
Stable tank recommended: Best added to established reef aquariums with stable parameters.
-
Best time to add: Introduce after lights out for best survival and reduced predation.
Recommended Quantity
Stocking depends on how severe your Aiptasia problem is:
| Tank Size |
Mild Infestation |
Heavy Infestation |
| Up to 30 gal |
2–3 Berghia |
4–6 Berghia |
| 30–60 gal |
4–6 Berghia |
6–10 Berghia |
| 60–120 gal |
6–10 Berghia |
10–15+ Berghia |
For best results, multiple Berghia help establish breeding and speed up control.
What to Expect After Adding Berghia
-
First few days: Berghia will hide during the day and hunt at night.
-
2–4 weeks: You may begin seeing fewer small Aiptasia.
-
1–3 months: Larger infestations gradually collapse as Berghia multiply and spread.
Results are not instant, but they are long-lasting and natural.

Due to the sensitive nature of this species, proper acclimation is critical.
Acclimation Instructions
- Float the container for 15–20 minutes to match temperature.
- Drip acclimate slowly for 30–45 minutes.
- Gently release Berghia near rockwork close to Aiptasia.
- Turn off pumps for 10–15 minutes to allow them to settle.
Avoid exposing them to air if possible.
